The starting point for any successful energy saving plan is to determine early on just where energy can be saved. The largest immediate savings are likely to be found with the a/c motors that drive pumps and fans in Swimming Pools and Leisure Centres. These would normally run at full speed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, consuming increasingly expensive electricity. (At some sites the cost of a kW hour has risen from 3.5p to over 8p in the last two years). The use of variable speed drives to control these motors means that their speed can be adjusted according to demand, rather than running constantly at full speed.
